Multi-Wasting

I fancy myself an effortless and elegant multi-tasker. I think that’s why homestead farming appeals to me so much. I see myself walking from garden to pasture swinging a wire basket of brown eggs, a bundle of carrots slung in my colorful vintage apron while I inspect the fluffy white sheep on my way in to make a delicious organic supper. Goats in the City

Wonderful preschool teacher Cheryl has come and taken Conrad and Bambi off for their big adventure in Madsion. Cheryl and her kids will raise the bottle babies for a few weeks and I’ve given them the task of figuring out how to tell the twins apart. The goats will live in the chicken coop in her back yard, which is perfectly legal in Madison. Not keeping goats in chicken coops, but having coops. continued »

At four days old you really can tell the difference in behavior between sheep and goats. The goal of a lamb’s existence is to be as close as possible to its mother. The group moves as one animal at all times and if separation occurs there is insistent crying until the family is rejoined. continued »

Well, all of the bottle babies are outside for the day and they’ve really come into their own little personalities now that there’s room to jump and and prance and roll. There is just nothing in the world like a baby goat, though a baby sheep comes close. continued »
