Lily Hope turned out to be a great name for a struggling Easter-week baby. She was so strong her first morning after cooking in front of the woodstove that I took her back out to her mamma. You might think it makes the most sense to just keep a weak lamb or goat in the house until summer. The crazy thing about the whole night of Karla’s birthing was that we had guests. And the guests were my best friend from college, Karla, and her daughter, Grace. My sheep Karla was named for my friend Karla, and Karla my friend had already named the lambs just born after two of her children, Lily Hope and Gabriel. How could we let any of them die? continued »

My oldest mama sheep, Karla, had her lambs last night. I’d been watching her all day, as she’d snuck off to the hedgerow and I knew she was ready to drop them. She’d been there since early morning, but apparently a watched ewe doesn’t birth. continued »
