Allright, Already!

“Let’s get this clambake started!”

Karla is now impossibly plump. She seems to walk a bit more mincingly, carefully, though she still trots along in the brisk, little-stepping, stiff-legged way of sheep. While her stick legs move quickly below, her belly above swishes slowly from side to side like a huge water balloon or a bean-bag chair stuffed with jello. In a pleasant break during chores this morning, I stood for some time in the warm winter sun, squinting, and watched the babies kick. They are easy to see just under the taut fleece.

Generally a rather unfriendly animal, Toulouse the Goose has taken to grooming the hay out of Karla’s wool. She always becomes very maternal at lambing time, waddling slowly among the ewes and babies, honking under her breath at visitors instead of full-on barking like a doberman. She’s our nurse.

Tomorrow night we are to start another snow storm, so for my sake and for the lambs, I hope these babies come tonight.

Get out! You can see the lambs kicking? How cool is that. Our own belly baby has been kicking, too — but we’re gonna give her another 90 days or so.

Sounds like it’s “Toulouse the Doula.” :)

Wow. 90 days. That’s coming fast. We can’t wait to meet you, little girl! No babies here yet this morning…

Oh, and a link in a comment! You are too much! I do love those ghostly womb pictures…

I just read this post last night and thought, “wow, I don’t remember seeing kicks while being preggo, must be a sheep thing,” and then just now, I saw some visible wiggles on my belly! But I’m still happy for this one to bake a little longer—we still have projects to finish! :) I hope Karla’s little ones come very soon, for her sake!

I must admit, I often missed the baby in once I had the baby out. Not that I’d want to trade back. I just missed the way of being with an in-baby. Pushing on knees that drew in, watching the bumps move from one side of my tummy to another, feeling that one-of-a-kind tickle as he/she moved from a tight spot…
