Globule’s Gang
Here they are, the gang of five. Globule’s kittens, up close and personal.

Bojangles. Look at those cute little white boots! He’s ready to dance. Of course, we aren’t really sure if he’s a he, but we did our best to discern what’s going on down there before we named names. Maggie’s had this one named since he came out first!

Skunkie. Born second, he was named the moment he slid out with a white stripe down his back. He doesn’t stink at all! In fact he smells like sheep, the way all the kittens do, since they’ve been raised in a nest of unwashed sheared wool. I wonder how long they’ll last in the nest now. All of the babies are struggling to stand up, teetering unsteadily on barely straight legs, but clearly trying mightily to master the skill. Still their eyes are closed.

Bobble. Born third, this little one looks just like her mother, so we tried to think of a name that was similar. Glob and Bob. Globby and Bobby. Bobble seems to fit, though all of the kittens look like bobble-heads right now, pushing up on their feet, but not really able to hold up those giant adorable skulls.

Squeaker. Emma felt this talkative little darling needed a descriptive moniker. The energetic bleater was born fourth and nearly didn’t make it, because she squiggled right out of the nest and was stuck to the cold concrete floor before Globule had a chance to clean her off. I gave her a nice warm water bath, rubber her off and put her in the nest, where Glob did a great job of reviving here. I promptly built up the sides of the nest, and it’s kept them in thus far.

Cat Ballou. Our favorite movie, Maggie’s favorite kitten. This last born surprised us, showing up the morning after the rest. And what a beautiful surprise! She’s perfectly symmetrical, nearly grey and so very tiger-like. She looks like a Siberian Tiger in the warm season.

The really cool thing about a homestead is that except maybe in the dead of winter, there are almost always some babies in season. Late winter for sheep, early spring calves and goats and now late spring and early summer we are enjoying lots of baby chicks and the piglets. Two hens that disappeared in the spring recently marched in from the hedgerow with 12 chicks. Now there are four more hens sitting.

Disappearing, reappearing hen mothers! I love it!
