Goats in the City
Wonderful preschool teacher Cheryl has come and taken Conrad and Bambi off for their big adventure in Madsion. Cheryl and her kids will raise the bottle babies for a few weeks and I’ve given them the task of figuring out how to tell the twins apart. The goats will live in the chicken coop in her back yard, which is perfectly legal in Madison. Not keeping goats in chicken coops, but having coops.
My good friend Alicia and her Mad City Chickens group a few years ago introduced legislation that allows Madison residents to have four hens each in their backyards. No roosters, though. When people buy chicks that turn out to be roosters, I often inherit them. That’s why I have so many gorgeous heritage roosters running around my farm! There is definitely no hope of sleeping in around here, though. Our Easter houseguests had plenty to say about our early morning wake-up calls. But I figure, why wait to start having fun?!
I’ve had a goat in the city before. Several years ago I was hired to take my lovely Franz to appear at a bar in Chicago’s Wrigleyville. The idea was that he’d walk to the ball field and break the Curse of The Goat that plagues the Cubs. He was a gentleman the three hours down in the Volvo, a big hit at the party and perfectly content to lead a little parade down the sidewalk to Wrigley Field. But the Cubs lost the World Series anyway. Franz and I went outlet shopping on the way home.
I’m sure Cheryl and her class will have a ball with the twins, and we hope to hear from them soon!

My Chicago neighbor across the street said we can have non-rooster chickens too! Rosalie is still begging to have chickens. I’m tempted occasionally, but don’t tell Rosalie. I’d need to set up some shelter for winter, but I have to finish the playhouse first!

Fun! Chickens will do a job on the garden, though. You might want to try a chicken tractor type thing were you have a shelter/run yard that can be moved every few days.

Wasn’t it just last year that you brought Franz down for the walk? I seem to remember it coinciding with Lucy’s birth…

Well, I couldn’t actually remember. I thought about asking Jon when the World Series with the Cubs happened, but I was embarrassed to admit I had no clue!
