Honeybun is One of Us
Well, after two days of coaxing and dog biscuits, Honeybun isn’t much closer to coming out of the cage. But she’s managed to win over the girls, who’ve been feeding her carrots and enjoying petting her gigantic velvet ears through the wire door. Both daughters tried to dissuade me from taking her when she was offered. “I’m sorry, Mom,” apologized Emma, crouched in front of Honeybun, who was nibbling pellets out of her palm. “I’m so glad you got the rabbit!”

This picture reminds me of Monty Python’s Holy Grail.
Maggie concurs, and has already started worrying about various rabbit health issues she’s read about here and there. “I’m pretty sure rabbits will only walk on carpets,” she said, an explanation for why Honeybun hasn’t ventured onto the concrete floor. “I read that somewhere.” I actually saw her coming out this evening, but then the washing machine knocked into spin and she dove back into her corner. Adorable. We all love her very wiggly nose best of all. And those ears…
I’d like to just pick her up and pull her out of the cage, but Laurie, her former owner, says that frightened bunnies will kick their back legs so forcefully they can break their own backs. Yikes! I guess I’ll just wait till she comes out herself, and then I can more easily pick her up with both back and front supported.
