Moo Grass

Some of you may know that I’m a little bit, a tiny little bit, of a musician. I played out some here and there in Chicago, mostly in folk -rock type projects. I took off for a couple of years while I was figuring out the farm thing, but I recently joined a bluegrass string band out here. I’ve always wanted to play around with Carter-family-style harmonies, so I’m thrilled to be learning this kind of music and thrilled to be playing with the talented Peg Cullen, on lead vocals and fiddle, Bob Cullen, on banjo and dobro, and Carole Spelic on upright bass and vocals. I’m sort of along for the ride on guitar and harmony vocals. They’re teaching me a ton of old-time tunes and I’m teaching them my favorite Gillian Welch songs. This Friday we play our first gig together as the MooGrass Trio.

Peg and Bob have played together for years here in Wisconsin and at their Florida summer home. They jam with lots of the well-known older fiddlers in the area and have an impressive repertoire of classic Appalachian ballads and toe-tapping hoe-downs. The show Friday is at River Valley Trading Company in Blanchardville, 204 S. Main, and starts at 7. We’ll probably play for about an hour, and there should be nice snacks and good company. You can bring your own wine or beer. The best way to find your way to Blanchardville is to use Mapquest. Maybe I’ll see you then!

“A little bit, a tiny little bit, of a musician”? That’s the first ridiculous thing you’ve ever posted here at circlemfarm.com!

Hoooray! So glad you’re doing music again! Too bad I’m a couple states south of you for the moment at a conference. I’ll think fondly of you!

    Hi Kriss,

We’re looking forward to coming out to farm this Saturday with Natalie, her husband Burr (a mandolin, guitar, drum, and various other instrument player), and members of their small group. I think she’s been in contact with you about specifics. For our part, we’re hoping to arrive sometime after 9, help with whatever you need help with – Ryan would be possibly even be interested in learning to milk a goat if the occasion should present itself, and then enjoy a potluck lunch. I think Natalie has coordinated her group to provide plenty of food, so please don’t feel you need to host more than you already are in welcoming us all in.

We had a GREAT dinner of hamburgers with fresh salad, topped with breaded, melted goat cheese, and boiled new potatoes. Yum!

    See you Saturday,
    -Hillary

Can’t wait! We’ll make some pot-luck ice cream, with all taking turns at the crank…
