Twins

After helping her deliver the second ram this afternoon, I’d been checking on Karla every 20 minutes or so to make sure she wasn’t becoming fatigued birthing the next. I stuck my head into our small stone calving barn at around 2 pm and was shocked to see the long, ropey red-white-and-purple afterbirth hanging from her back end.

Just twins! All that tummy for just two! Karla seemed pretty shocked, too, and kept taking breaks from grooming the lustrous black lambs to bend in half and sniff at the increasingly messy organ dragging behind her picking up straw. By 3 pm, aided by continued contractions and Karla’s agitated pacing, the placenta detached completely. I removed the mess, spread a fresh layer of fluffy yellow straw over the top of the now well-used pen, and left the tired ewe to eat hay and enjoy her gorgeous babies. I’ll be checking on them every hour or so to make sure nursing is established and, eventually, to give them their names.

    WOW! They are gorgeous!
Just wondering if we could wander by at some point with the kids to see them?
    Enjoy these beauties!

Thanks! I took a few videos this time, and I’m going to give that a try today, too. Fine project for another snow-in.
