Still Hangin’ In There

Thank goodness, Piggy Lou has put off pigging for another day at least. Unless she delivers tonight…

Still smiling!

I was so worried about the piglets being born in last night’s frost that I tossed and turned in bed. But I woke up to see Piggy Lou literally running, clumsy as she is right now, back and forth through her garden tossing up turf in a most anxious way. She spent all day preparing a cozy nest, nosing up the sides, carrying hay in her mouth to fluff it up, and finally settling in this afternoon. I’ve been hand-feeding her eggs while she’s tucked in. That’s the sort of thing I appreciated when I was pregnant. Well, not exactly being fed raw eggs, but you get the idea.

What a lovely nest!

I’d like to wake up tomorrow morning and find Piggy Lou nursing 12 healthy piglets on her 14 teats. Otherwise, she’s going to have them in the midst of several days of thunderstorms. Just in case, I’ve rigged this slightly ridiculous creep shelter that the piglets can get into, but Piggy Lou can’t, since she’s tall enough to knock out the heat lamp. That’s pretty much the best I can do for these babies-to-be. Now it’s just prayer and waiting.

Not much, but it might come in handy.
