Food and wine and story? Oh bless my soul....sounds like something I could so embrace!! Yes, let us talk after the rush is over.

No, we did not find land...yet. I am always on the lookout...and then, laying it down...but not for long. If, indeed, it is out there, I think I will know it when I see it.

My second son lives in Janesville with his family and so we do get down to that part of the state often. At your invitation, I would love to pay you a visit, yuck around in the mud and meet Miss Shiver. How blessed you are, Kriss, to have something that NEEDS you. That calls on your passion. That is good work!!!

Thank you for your kind reply, Kriss.

P. S. correccted the spelling on my last name...Bangert...

What a wonderful note!
Did you find your land west of Madison? Do you live near us now?
I'd love to have an adult story time, and we could throw a bit of wine and cheese in there, as well. I think that would make a very Benedictine sort of party.
Perhaps we should revisit the conversation after Christmas?

In the meantime - greetings from Shiver, who has turned out to be one of the prettiest and most tame lambs I've had. When I brought the water and feed last night, I felt a bump on the back of my boots - it was Shiver giving me a snuggle. And this morning she came right up to greet me, too. This is pretty rare for a lamb that's not being bottled. I feel it's a nice bit of encouragement from the animal part of our family that perhaps they appreciate the care and work tending them in the winter requires. Especially on these days that stay below 10 degrees!

Kriss,

I am Andrew Deitrich's aunt, Sue's sister. Sue sent me your site and I enjoy reading about the wonderful life you have created for yourself and your family. Though I have lived in Wisconsin all of my life, I have either forgotten that I have been to the 'driftless area' or indeed never been there until two years ago when my hsuband and I went in search of land west of Madison. It felt so much like Ireland. I was in love.

Wendell Barry is wonderful....I am reading Jayber Crow right now. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a weekend of adult story times?? I love to be read to and to read to others. Simple pleasures indeed.

Blessings to you and to yours and to Shiver...

God Bless Jon Boyd and his love of books. I'm going to find a book on urban gardening and how to raise goats in the city and maybe we will get you back here. Of course we know you're where you are supposed to be, but we miss you. lb

Hi, stranger! How nice to "hear" from you! I think of often, as now I'm in a bluegrass band. Anyway I could convince you and Eric to move your shindig up here sometime for a farm hoe-down? I've got lots of fun bluegrass/gospel contacts up here we could bring in, too.

What a treasure all this is!
It's my loss to not have contacted you before now, but I would love to visit. It makes me weepy just to read all you do and are a part of!
You are missed here in the urban wilds.

I love that herd-check story!
I love goats, too, and I want to invite you to come snuggle ours! When it warms up, of course, because by then there will be babies. I have one doe ready to pop in my barn right now. Better go check on her...

Kriss, I haven't had the chance to meet you yet, but I hope I get the chance. I'm in my first year on staff with IV and have really enjoyed getting to know Shannon, and through him, your farm life. Shannon has your blog linked to his facebook, and now I am hooked. You are living a bit of my dream, this entry especially. I grew up reading about James and his adventures (one of my favorites is during a herd check on a dairy farm, he reaches under the last "cow" in the barn only to realize there is no udder...he has offended the bull), and started out college as a Pre-Vet major. Goats are my true love, and I am terribly jealous of your little piece of heaven your family has down there. Keep writing, you are so talented, and it keeps those of us connected to the land and animals, even when we are unable to farm for ourselves.

Kriss, I am honored to have my painting on your website and to have you as neighbor and friend. I sometimes forget how beautiful the landscape is and wish I could truly capture its beauty on paper. Peg
