Lovin’ the Lambs

Our six winter lambs are growing so quickly and so well it’s a joy to pop into the little mama corral each morning and see how they’ve changed in 24 hours. Yesterday I noticed that Polly’s Pretty and Precious have developed little caramel-colored booties on their feet – just adorable!

I have no problems playing favorites with my animals – in fact, it is necessary if you are going to breed and sell – and these two are my current best. Both have freckles on their nose that match their darling booties, and both have extra-long ears that actually curl inward on the ends. When they take a break from leaping and running to stop and look at you, their ears wiggle in different directions like those of a horse. And Pretty is one of two sheep I’ve got that has markings like black liner around her eyes (hence the name). The other is Princess, one of Polly’s ewelambs from last year, who now has tiny little horns which quite compliment her lovely rimmed eyes. I find her to be a stunning animal, and I’m looking forward to seeing how her first babies turn out. They should arrive in May.

I do love all the lambs, though these two are especially dear to me. Petunia’s babies, Lacy and Macy are super fuzzy with long, long open curls, which is something new here for us, and I’m excited to see what their fleeces will be like as they grow up. Meanwhile, Cricket’s lambs, Jiminy (our lone boy in the mama corral) and Christmas, are more typical of our Finn-Rambouillets, with tight, greasy curls that are sure to be very soft and nice for spinning and knitting.

These lambs are probably just about ready to be let out with their moms into the big pasture with the rest of the herd. It will be so much harder to catch them up and snuggle them out there, though! Pictures soon…

    Hi there!
I received information about your CSA program from my collegue at UW Hospital, Sam. If there is availability this year for another member, I would be interested in receiving more information.
    Thanks!

    Hi!
I was just curious if you have any memberships left for this coming up year? I actually live right in Blachardville! If you do, could you send me some information.

    Thanks!

Oh, you’re KILLING me! Can’t I just come RIGHT NOW and get some lambs for my own flock already? Is a fence really that necessary? :)
