Shearing Day 2010

One of those cases in which a picture tells a thousand words. But I’ll add a few. When the shearer peels back the fleece on some particular sheep, the colors and textures underneath are so stunning that you can hear, even over the loud clippers, a collective gasp among the work crew. This was one of those.

Here are some more beautiful locks from our now-naked flock:

Click on any of these pictures to get a closer look at the wool.

“Hmm. Well, that feels a bit odd but I might get used to it.”

“I really did need my nails done.”

“Hey, this is embarrassing. Stop staring. I feel sheepish…”

This ewe, Karla, generally appears to be a brownish sheep. But underneath her bleached-out fleece, she’s actually spotted grey. How pretty!

This is Little Horn, our usually majestic ram. But like Samson, he seems to have lost all his pride when he got his curls cut off. Poor guy.

Hi, Kriss—The scarf class in Mineral Point last Sunday was awesome! Today I am adding a little more to my scarf—and have been looking at the Dharma catalog. I have ordered scarves, scarves, scarves, before. So I am good at that. However, I am looking at the dyes—and there are so many choices. I don’t find the Jacquard Acid Dyes you suggested, though I do see “acid dyes” listed under more dyes—40 fantastic colors, etc. It talks about using them on top of the stove, but does the microwave step accomplish that same thing? They come in powdered form.

If I just want to get started a little bit, can you suggest what I need? 8 oz? a pound? of a few colors. And do I need any other “additives” to set things?

Also enjoyed your website. If want to come there someday. Thanks for your help.

Well—here I am again. I just went to dharma website—and I do find the jacquard acid dyes there—question. How much does 1/2 ounce of the dye make???
